As per a recent piece of news, the number of beneficiaries of the Educational Loan Scheme in Tamil Nadu, India has reduced starkly since the last three years.

 

The figures mentioned below present the grim picture entailed by the entire education loan scheme started by the government:


  • The scheme launched in the year 2008-2009 witnessed only 108 students benefiting from it


  • The figures were more dismal for the year 2011- 2012 whereby only 27 students were found availing themselves the relevant benefits whereas the previous year the figures further plummeted to 14


Here is a detailed account of the amount disbursed and the number of beneficiaries each year

  • In the year 2012-2013, as already mentioned above there were only 14 reported beneficiaries of the scheme while total amount disbursed was INR 7.39 lakhs

  • In the year 2011-2012,  there were only 27 reported beneficiaries of the scheme while total amount disbursed was INR 13.87 lakhs

  •        In the year 2010-2011,  there were only 22 reported beneficiaries of the scheme while total amount disbursed was INR 12.59 lakhs


  •  In the year 2009-2010,  there were around 41 reported beneficiaries of the scheme while total amount disbursed was INR 30.48 lakhs


  •  In the year 2008-2009,  the number of beneficiaries  stood at 4, while total amount disbursed was INR 1.63 lakhs


In totality with a whopping INR 65.96 lakhs disbursed as funds since its launch, only 108 students have been able to benefit.

 

These schemes are meant for the weaker sections of the society whereby students opting for vocational or technical courses are entitled to relevant benefits.

 

The failure to draw more students, in this regard, has been primarily attributed to the strict norms attached to the entire process.

 

The scheme entails that the students who have enrolled in government recognized institutions are entitled to a maximum amount of INR 2.5 lakh for the total of five years with the yearly benefits standing at INR 50,000. The norms of collateral security and earning ceiling are also attributed as reasons behind the students’ difficulty in qualifying for these schemes.

 

It is the Tamil Nadu Minorities Economic Development Corporation or TAMCO that manages the entire scheme. It serves as the State Channelising Agency for the National Minorities Development and Finance Corporation.

 

M.H Jawahiruallah, Manithaneya Makkal Katchi (MMK), an MLA opined that the norms governing the scheme should be relaxed to a certain extent.

 

On the other hand A. Mohammedjan, the minister of Backward Classes and Minorities Welfare had to a certain extent attributed the entire phenomenon to the possible beneficiaries securing benefits provided by the nationalised banks.

 

However, on the positive side, there has been significant rise in the number of beneficiaries with respect to the merit and means based scholarships.
